Abstract

Post-translational modifications of lipids and proteins are important determinants in defining function in both normal- and disease-state biology (Apweiler et al. 1999; Bertozzi and Kiessling 2001; Shental-Bechor and Levy 2009; Varki 1993). In particular, the addition of glycan residues synthesized by the repertoire of glycosyltransferases and glycosidases provide the mammalian glycome a large array of glycan structures that add to the diversity already created by the proteome (Cattaruzza and Perris 2006). At the same time, many glycan structures are ubiquitous in nature (van Die and Cummings 2009). Pathogen glycans can mimic host mammalian glycosphingolipids, lending to their pathophysiology. This mimicry provides insight into the processes contributing to their pathophysiology, including elements of recognition, signaling, and evasion of the immune system by glycan processing (Tsai 2001).
