Zusammenfassung
Der Mathematiker D’Arcy Wenthworth Thompson ist nicht nur bekannt geworden für die Tatsache, dass er für den rekordträchtigen Zeitraum von 64 Jahren einen Lehrstuhl in St, Andrews und Dundee besetzte, er hat vielmehr die Wurzeln für eine neue Fachrichtung gelegt, die sogenannte Bio-Mathematik. Obwohl er über 300 wissenschaftliche Beiträge und Bücher veröffentlichte, wird sein Name vor allem mit einer Arbeit aus dem Jahre 1917 in Verbindung gebracht : seiner Abhandlung „On Growth and Form“ (Thompson, 1917). Im letzten Kapitel dieses Buches stellte er eine Theorie biologischer Transformationen vor, mit der man die Formen von Lebewesen vergleichen konnte. Diese Theorie besagt, dass mathematische Funktionen auf die Formen eines Organismus angewandt werden können, um ihn kontinuierlich in andere, ähnliche Organismen zu verwandeln. Ein bekanntes Beispiel aus seinem Buch zeigt Abb. 1.
