Zusammenfassung
Die Bedeutung von Licht für Stimmung und Gesundheit im Allgemeinen sowie für die Pathogenese und mögliche Therapie affektiver Erkrankungen wurde schon in der Antike bemerkt. So empfahl der Arzt Aretaios im 2. Jahrhundert v. Chr., dass „Lethargiker in das Licht gelegt werden sollen und den Strahlen der Sonne exponiert werden sollen (weil Krankheit die Düsternis ist)“ (zitiert bei Wehr 1989). Der griechische Arzt Herodotus (2. Jhdt. vor Chr.) gilt als der Vater der Heliotherapie, indem er zur allgemeinen Wiedererlangung von Gesundheit und zur Gewichtszunahme empfahl, sich besonders im Herbst, Winter und Frühling der Sonne auszusetzen (zitiert in Licht 1959). Auch der Sonnenkult der präkolumbianischen Völker Amerikas kennt die therapeutische Anwendung von Licht.
