Reconstruction of the post burn ear

Abstract

The reconstruction of the human ear is a considerable challenge for the Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon. This challenge is considerably increased when the need for reconstruction is due to damage following burn injury. The external ear is conceptually simple; a sandwich of skin, cartilage and skin. However the construction of the ear; the curves, the folds, the shape and the placement give a complexity, a grace, an elegance that is impossible to fully reconstruct. In this chapter I will first describe the anatomy of the normal ear and then discuss the management of the acute ear burn. Prevention is always better than cure. When a patient does present, however, with an ear burn then an assessment of the damage and a risk/benefit analysis of potential reconstructions is essential. At the very outset it is important to listen carefully to the patient’s concerns and their expectations.
