Zusammenfassung

Mit dem Begriff „Generation“ werden in der Alltagssprache die unterschiedlichsten Phänomene bezeichnet, soweit sie nur irgendwie mit Altersgemeinsamkeiten zusammenhängen. Die außerordentliche Heterogenität der von dem Begriff umschlossenen Erscheinungen und die Unverbindlichkeit seiner Verwendung erschweren bis heute seine Ubernahme in den Begriffsbestand der Sozialwissenschaften. Eine präzise Festlegung von Begriffsumfang und -inhalt gehört daher an den Anfang jeder einschlägigen Analyse. Auch die grundlegenden sozialen und politischen Vorgänge, die mit dem Konzept der Generation eingefangen werden sollen, müssen so eindeutig wie möglich beschrieben werden. Dem wendet sich das folgende Kapitel zu. Nach einem kurzen Abriß der Begriffsgeschichte (2.1.) soll die bis heute unübertroffene Generationskonzeption Karl Mannheims eingehend vorgestellt werden (2.2.). Ein dritter Abschnitt (2.3.) beschäftigt sich mit dem weiteren Schicksal des Generationsbegriffs in den modernen Sozialwissenschaften. Wir werden sehen, daß das Niveau der Pionierleistung Mannheims nicht gehalten werden konnte. So soll ein letzter Punkt (2.4.) der Neuformulierung des Mannheimschen Forschungsprogramms gewidmet sein: der Definition des Begriffs der „politischen Generation“, der Ausdifferenzierung verwandter Begriffe, der Darstellung der Grundprozesse in der Abfolge politischer Generationen.
