Summary
Tinea imbricata caused by Trichophyton concentricum is a common disease in the pacific deserving special attention because of its socially discriminating effects. In the botanical and ethnographic literature of this region the traditional treatment of Tinea imbricata with leaves of Cassia alata (fam. Caesalpiniaceae) is rarely mentioned. The author, contrastingly, noted in many areas of Melanesia that knowledge of this autochthonous therapy still exists. The probably most effective component in the leaves of Cassia alata is Chrysarobin (1, 8-Dihydroxy-3methyl-anthrachinone) which is used in the European pharmacopoea since about 100 years against psoriasis and some mycotic infections of the skin. In the course of general acculturation and the import of partially very effective drugs also useful traditional medicinal plants like Cassia alata fell into oblivion. It is argued that treatment of Tinea imbricata with Cassia alata should be kept or re-introduced especially as the costly therapy with Griseofulvine can hardly be administered properly in rural areas, often has serious sideeffects and as reinfections do occur. The author is of the opinion that traditional medicinal plants like Cassia alata justify their being tested clinically without prior costly and time-consuming chemical and pharmacological analysis.
