Zusammenfassung

Wir lernen Dr. Okopedi, einen traditionellen Herbalisten aus dem städtischen Milieu Westafrikas, in Calabar kennen. Während eines achtwöchigen Aufenthaltes (Aug./Sept. 1984) sind wir dort vorwiegend mit der Untersuchung spiritualistischer Kirchen (spiritual churches) befaßt. Calabar, die Hauptstadt des Cross River State (SO-Nigeria), hat ca. 130 000 Einwohner, in der Mehrzahl Efik und Ibibio, von denen die meisten Christen sind. Heilung und Schutz suchen die Menschen in den zahlreichen spiritualistischen Kirchen und bei den traditionellen Herbalisten. In einem Stadtteil registrieren wir Kirchen und Gesundheitseinrichtungen. Meist zeigen große künstlerisch gestaltete und auffällig plazierte Tafeln den Weg zu Missionskirchen, spiritualistischen Kirchen, traditionellen Heilern (Hebammen, Knochenheiler, Herbalisten) und Medizinläden.
