Abstract
This paper is an attempt to reflect on gender studies in the context of South Africa’s monumental shift from authoritarianism to democracy and the imperatives of a country whose priorities are reconstruction and development. The most remarkable feature of the transition has been in the rapid growth of Black students in all South African universities. At the same time, equity and transformation have been harnessed together in a restructuring of all universities in the country. This process has dramatically changed the nature of university culture, where vocation and professionalism, linked to costs, have shifted educational priorities.
