Zusammenfassung
Es gibt viele verschiedene Arten von Ritualen und bisher hat noch niemand eine allgemein befriedigende Einteilung geschaffen. Es gibt einige grobe Unterschiede, die gebräuchlich sind: Übergangsrituale/Jahreszeiten-Rituale, Intensifikationsrituale/Rebellionsrituale, religiöse Rituale/profane (oder säkulare) Rituale. Auch diese minimale Kategorisierung ist verwirrend und problematisch. Die Begriffe werden teils unterschiedlich verwendet, teils willkürlich gesetzt, zumal ein gegebenes Ritual möglicherweise den Kriterien verschiedener Typen entspricht. Die Unterscheidung wird dann aber gänzlich hinfällig, wenn die Daten interkulturell und interreligiös sind.
