Zusammenfassung
Die rasante Entwicklung des Internets führt derzeit zu einer grundlegenden Transformation großer Teile der Wirtschaft, ja der gesamten Ökonomie. Der Grund hierfür liegt in der zentralen Bedeutung der Ressource Information für die Organisation arbeitsteiligen Wirtschaftens.1 In der Folge verändern verbesserte technische Möglichkeiten der Informationsgewinnung, -verarbeitung und -verbreitung nachhaltig das Management jeder Unternehmung.2 Rayport/Sviokla (Virtual Value Chain, 1995) beschreiben diese neue Wettbewerbssituation folgendermaßen:
„Every business today competes in two worlds: a physical world of resources that managers can see and touch and a virtual world made of information“3
„In the information and entertainment industries, bits and atoms often are confused. Is the publisher of a book in the information delivery business (bits) or in the manufacturing business (atoms)? The historical answer is both, but that will change rapidly as information appliances become more ubiquitous and user friendly.“
