Conflict is a result of interpersonal interaction where those in conflict possess a belief structure which cannot be reconciled (Bryant, 1983).
A belief or knowledge structure “is a mental template that individuals impose on an information environment to give it form and meaning” (Walsh, 1995: 281).
Negotiation is viewed as the construction and reconstruction of divergent meanings and actions by organizational actors.
Starting conditions refer to the formation stage.
The quotes illustrate perceptions at the individual level of analysis. By having used those quotes where inter-organizational member agreement exists, linkages are established between the individual and collective level. This builds on the assumption that high inter-organizational member agreement reflects the collective belief structure. In those cases where there is no agreement, 1 will particularly show the different perceptions.
