Zusammenfassung
Ziel dieses Beitrags1 ist es, die Voraussetzungen bzw. Erfolgsfaktoren der Fusion nationaler und europäischer Identitätskonstrukte im Kontext der Osterweiterung der Europäischen Union herauszuarbeiten. Die Beziehung zwischen nationaler Identität, europäischer Identität und der davon zu unterscheidenden EU-mitgliedstaatlichen Identität gewinnt zunehmend an politischer Bedeutung, da die meisten Regierungen der Beitrittsländer derzeit beabsichtigen, Referenden über die EU-Mitgliedschaft abzuhalten. Dadurch machen sie den Beitritt ihres Landes abhängig davon, wie die Bürger zentrale nationale Interessen wahrnehmen und ob die nationalen Interessen mit den erwarteten Konsequenzen der EU-Mitgliedschaft vereinbar sind. Interessen- und Problemwahrnehmungen sind eingebettet in Identitätsverständnisse, die einem kontinuierlichen öffentlichen Deutungsprozess unterliegen.
