Abstract
Since the Hanoverian succession in the British Monarchy at the beginning of the eighteenth century, Germany and England have to a certain extent, walked in step. Through the nineteenth century onwards there were many admiring voices in England about German technological progress and efficiency and the strong German institutions that underpinned them. The Germans, on the other hand, were admirers of the stability of English political structures, the monarchy, parliament, liberal accommodation of dissent and the flexibilities in labour market management, sometimes contrasting so painfully with the rigidities of their own.
