Abstract

Ever since the BBC started broadcasting, the Corporation has played a significant role for the British public or even for the conscience of the nation as a whole. Often referred to as Auntie or The Beeb, the BBC has been central to the cultural life of Britain for decades and has proved to be one of the major success stories of the post-war period. Amongst other things, the BBC has provided listeners and viewers with a wide variety of programmes, fostered the Arts, maintained high levels of training, influenced public opinion and informed the national debate. All this led to the Corporation occupying a central role in British society.
