Abstract

The customized machine tool problem is presented as the joint optimization of four decision problems. Each of these problems can be formulated as a mixed-integer linear program, see chapters 3 to 6. These single problems describe the decision process in machine tool design and manufacture. Since the joint problem is very complex, the decisions are often made sequentially. However, optimizing these problems individually can lead to inefficient solutions for the manufacturer. Alternatively, a general and comprehensive “Customized Machine Tool Model” (CMTM) is formulated. It integrates the four decision problems into a single model. In what follows, we are going to briefly restate the different decision problems before presenting the CMTM model. As has been explained before, the manufacturer’s decision which functions he to offer is excluded from the model.
