Abstract
The use of photoacoustic (PA) methods to obtain calorimetric data on photoactive systems is considered. With this application in mind the theoretical basis of the technique is outlined and some examples of its use on chemical, physical and biological systems are presented. Pitfalls that can be encountered in chosing references, especially for modulation frequency spectra as well as in making proper background corrections are considered and illustrated. Various methods for calibrating the PA signal in terms of the absolute fraction of radiation that is absorbed or in absolute energy units, for calorimetric purposes, are given. Absolute calorimetric measurements on samples that are photoacoustically saturated, are shown to be feasible.
