Man unterschied bis vor kurzem drei Fraktionen des Hydroxyprolin im Serum, welche dem Kollagenstoffwechsel zugeordnet wurden:

a) das freie Hydroxyprolin

h) das peptidgebundene- und
-
c) das proteingebundene Hydroxyprolin.
