Abstract

Our current understanding of the pathogenesis of the atherosclerotic plaque in human subjects, incomplete as it is, is the result of a galaxy of studies by many scientists from many disciplines. The investigations have extended over many years and have utilized painstaking clinical studies as well as clinical-pathological correlations in individual patients and groups of patients, a wide variety of epidemiological studies of populations and cohorts of populations, extensive experimental work with animal models of atherosclerosis and, more recently, intensive basic investigations utilizing the approaches of the biochemist, biophysicist, physicist, cell biologist, molecular biologist and their pathological counterparts.
