Abstract
In the recent years a considerable progress has been made towards the understanding of matrix productive function of smooth muscle cells (SMC) of the arterial wall (Haust and More, 1958; Kádár et al., 1969, 1971, 1972; Ross and Klebanoff, 1971; Ross, 1971; Wight and Ross, 1975a, b; Narayanan et al., 1976; Muir et al., 1976). However, little is known about fine morphological aspects of their secretory process (Haust and More, 1966; Trillo and Haust, 1976; Weidenbach and Massmann, 1975), especially regarding the possible role of the cytoplasmic microtubules (Mt) and the Golgi complex in the secretion by these cells. A large number of studies are already available concerning the significance of Mt and Golgi complex in this process in various cell types (McGregor and Mackie, 1967; Jamieson and Palade, 1967a, b; Weinstock and Leblond, 1971, 1974; Le Marchand et al., 1973; Ehrlich et al.,1974; Olsen and Prockop, 1974; Gratzl and Schwab, 1976).
