In den Syntactic Structures 1 wird von Chomsky colorless green ideas sleep furiously der Äußerung furiously Bleep green ideas colorless gegenübergestellt, und es wird behauptet, daß beide Ausdrücke ‚nonsensical‘, der erste jedoch ‚grammatical‘ sei. Archibald Hill2 greift 1961 diese Beispiele auf und stellt damit Informantenproben an. Die Sätze sind dabei nicht isoliert, sondern erscheinen in einem ‚test framework‘. Er kommt zu der Ansicht: “the transformationist should not ask whether an isolated sentence is grammatical. He should take sets of superficially similar sentences and apply an identical trans-form to all of them, exhibiting the results”(10). Das Reaultat dieser Transformationen wird ‚naïve expert speakers‘ zur Beurteilung vorgelegt. Die Annahme, daß über die Wohlgeformtheit oder Grammatikalität einer Aussage die Intuition des Grammatikers entscheidet, wird auch von Geoffrey Leech in einem Artikel3 kritisiert und scharf gegeißelt, wobei er der transformationell-generativen Theorie „its unashamed subjectivism, in its acceptance of the two roles of the linguist as both analyst and informant, without making a clear distinction between these two roles“(87) vorwirft. Leech ordnet der transformationellen Unterscheidung zwischen competence und performance die beiden Begriffe grammaticality und acceptability zu und gelangt zu dem Schluß, daß es sich hier nicht um eine spezifisch sprachliche Dichotomie handelt, sondern um die allgemein gültige Unterscheidung zwischen ‚theoretical terms‘ und ‚observational terms‘.
