Zusammenfassung

Bisher haben wir stets unberücksichtigt gelassen, daß ein Entscheidungsproblem auch eine zeitliche Komponente haben kann, oblgeich in den meisten Beispielen und bei zahlreichen Überlegungen (z. B. in § 8.2, § 9.4, § 14.5, § 16) die Einführung einer Zeitkomponente naheliegt. Dieses Versäumnis holen wir jetzt nach und spalten die Entscheidung in mehrere aufeinanderfolgende Teile auf. Das Resultat ist ein Entscheidungsprozeß. Man sagt von ihm, daß er sich in mehreren Stufen manifestiert, daß er mehrstufig oder [nach R. Bellman 1957] dynamisch sei.

To give some idea of the magnitude of this number, suppose that the evaluation of a particular policy takes a microsecond — a charitable estimate. ... we see that this straightforward enumeration of policies would require at least 10²⁵ years. Since the age of the earth is of the order of 5 billion years = 5 × 10⁹ years, we see that we would require a time considerably in excess of the age of the earth.
