Ultrastructure of Mechanoreceptors in the Rat Trachea

  • Chapter

Abstract

The first distinct indications regarding the afferent innervation of the tracheal mucous membrane date back to the end of the last century. In 1897 Ploschko was able in preparations treated with methylene blue, to recognize nerves on the peripheral pole of the epithelium cells that were shaped like small grapes. These grapes or button-like thickenings are of importance also in the works of the subsequent years.
