Der Informationstechnologie (IT) kommt in der Automobilindustrie große Bedeutung zu. Fast alle Kernprozesse eines Automobilherstellers (Entwicklung, Herstellung, Vermarktung von Produkten, Querschnitts- und Steuerungsprozesse) sind ohne effektiven und effizienten IT-Einsatz heute nicht mehr denkbar.
