Abstract

The field of foreign policy (leaving aside Turkish-Greek relations) is probably the area in which fewest problems would arise if Turkey were to join the EC. There are few conflicts of interest and a long history of co-operation (which can be traced back to 1856 when the Ottoman Empire was admitted to the European concert); and, on the personal level, the Turkish Ministery of Foreign Affairs is a bulwark of pro-European feeling, together with a wider western orientation.
