Zusammenfassung
„Koexistenz von Überfluß und Mangel“, „wilde und zahme Orte“, „Zentrum und Marginalität“, „Gentrification und Ghettoisierung “, „Revanchismus der Städte“: Das sind die Schlagworte, die den heutigen Zustand der Städte beschreiben sollen (Stanley 1996; Smith 1996). Das gemeinsame Thema läßt sich unschwer ausmachen: Soziale Ungleichheit kulminiert in den Städten. Sie findet ihren Ausdruck in der neuen Segregation von Gewinnern und Verlierern und in ethnischen Konflikten. In der „Krise der Städte“ (Heitmeyer, Dollase & Backes 1998) manifestieren sich die fortschreitenden Desintegrationsprozesse des städtischen Lebens. Das „Ende der zivilisierten Stadt“ (Eisner 1997), der hochentwickelten „Integrationsmaschine“ (Häußermann 1995: 96) zeigt sich vor allem an einer Zunahme von Kriminalität und speziell Gewaltkriminalität im städtischen Raum. Nicht umsonst ist der Vergleich mit den Städten des 19. Jahrhunderts heute wieder aktuell. Die postmodernen Städte können ihre Ähnlichkeit mit den europäischen Metropolen zu Beginn des Industriezeitalters kaum verleugnen.
