Zusammenfassung
Es gehört zu den grundlegenden Erkenntnissen der Festkörperphysik, daß das Verhalten fester Stoffe in den meisten Fällen primär vom interatomaren Abstand sowie von der geometrischen Anordnung nächster Nachbaratome (charakterisiert durch Bindungswinkel und Koordinationszahl) bestimmt wird. Der physikalische Grund dafür ist die relativ kurze Reichweite der interatomaren Wechselwirkungskräfte. Diese kurze Reichweite bedingt, daß die Wechselwirkungen zwischen nächsten Nachbarn viel stärker sind als jene zwischen übernächsten oder weiter weg liegenden Partnern. Ändern sich daher in einem Festkörper (bei gleichbleibender chemischer Zusammensetzung) — beispielsweise bei einer Phasenumwandlung — die interatomaren Abstände und/oder die Bindungswinkel, so ist dies stets von spektakulären Eigenschaftsänderungen begleitet. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist der Übergang vom Diamant zum Graphit (Abb. 1). Während im Diamant jedes Kohlenstoffatom äquidistant von vier Nachbaratomen tetraedrisch umgeben ist, liegt im Graphit eine Lagenstruktur vor.
