Zusammenfassung
Im Schlussdokument der ersten internationalen Konferenz zur globalen Erwärmung und ihren Auswirkungen auf das Klima Afrikas, der „Nairobi Declaration on Climatic Change“ wurde bereits 1990 konstatiert, dass aufgrund des Klimawandels zukünftig erhebliche ökologische, ökonomische und politische Konsequenzen zu erwarten seien. Allerdings gibt es bis heute (2023) aufgrund der Größe des afrikanischen Kontinents keinen allgemeingültigen Trend hinsichtlich der Entwicklung der Klimabedingungen. Weitgehende Einigkeit besteht jedoch darin, dass die klimatischen Veränderungen im Wesentlichen auf die Anreicherung atmosphärischer Gase wie CO2infolge der Verbrennung fossiler Energieträger erfolgt und nicht aufgrund natürlicher klimatischer Veränderungen, die nicht CO2-induziert waren, wie am Ende des letzten Glazials (siehe Exkurs: Sahara oder Sahel? und Abb. 9.1).
