Zusammenfassung
Afrika bietet wie kein anderer Kontinent Einblicke in die älteste geologische Geschichte der Erde. Fast 60 % der Kontinentalfläche bestehen aus dem direkt an der Oberfläche anstehenden präkambrischen Sockel, der auch als „basement complex“ bezeichnet wird und älter als 550 Mio. (Ma) Jahre ist. Aber auch der geologische Untergrund der übrigen 40 % der Fläche Afrikas wird fast ausschließlich von Gesteinen aus dem präkambrischen Archaikum und Proterozoikum gebildet und nur von vergleichsweise geringmächtigen jüngeren Schichtfolgen phanerozoischer Gesteine des Deckgebirges überlagert.
