Abstract
I take the opportunity of contributing to the Festschrift for Rainer Hofmann, an expert on the international law relating to minorities, to make a few observations on the historical and regional origins of this area of the law in the Nordic countries by comparing the 1920 and 1921 expert reports regarding the Åland Islands question.
Prof. Dr. Georg Nolte, Judge at the International Court of Justice.
This contribution is based on a presentation given at the “Seminar on The Legacy of the Åland Islands Solution” that was held on 5 April 2022 at The Hague Academy of International Law at the invitation of the governments of Finland and Sweden. I thank Ms. Janina Barkholdt and Ms. Yifei Wang for their excellent help during the research and the editing of this contribution.
