Abstract
This dissertation analyses the nexus between giving, belonging and Jewishness in South Africa. Structuring aspects like class, race, economics, and post-apartheid politics are at the basis of this study. At the same time, it shows how individual agency reproduces or alleviates inequalities and makes sense of the ambiguities of charity.

In this introduction I refer to charity and charitable giving synonymously, because charity is the most common term and charitable giving the term which I prefer and which connects to the realms of gift giving. In 2.1. I will problematise the term charity in more detail.

Almost all my informants have been anonymised except for my expert interview partners because it would have been impossible to anonymise and still inform about the reason for their expertise. I have of course informed them about using their real name in my thesis.

According to Cohen whether diaspora is capitalized or not, is indicative of the shift within diaspora scholarship First, when referring to the prototypical Jewish case, Diaspora was capitalized and used only in the singular.
Later, when the phenomenon was extended beyond the Jewish case, diaspora became a “methaphoric designation” (Safran 1991: 83), more theorised and situated in the social sciences, diaspora appeared without capitalisation and in plural (Cohen 2008: 1). Acknowledging the Jewish case as one among many other diasporas, and diaspora itself as concept, I use diaspora with a small initial letter.

Commonly the term outreach is used to label charitable giving towards disadvantaged individuals outside of the group, differentiating it from support withing the group through communal and social service organisations Thelen/Leutloff-Grandits/Peleikis 2009: 6).
