Zusammenfassung

Die meisten Schiefervorkommen in Kanada und den Vereinigten Staaten befinden sich in den Appalachen. Die Appalachen können in tektonostratigraphische Zonen gegliedert werden (Hatcher, Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences 15:337–362, 1987). Im zentralen und südlichen Teil werden die Appalachen unterteilt in die Zonen Piedmont, Blue Ridge, Valley and Ridge sowie Appalachian Plateau. Im Gegensatz dazu wird der nördliche Teil in Antiklinorien und Synklinorien gegliedert.
