The Search for the Nature of the Soul

Abstract

In this chapter we provide a brief overview of the history of concepts concerning the relationship of the “soul” or psyche to the brain and the body. This history begins with the ancient doctrine of the three soul faculties, followed by the so-called ventricular doctrine, which operated from late antiquity through the Middle Ages and into the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and was then superseded by the results of modern brain research and the attempts to “locate” the psyche in the brain, especially with the help of imaging techniques. Many speculations were made about the nature of the conduction of stimuli in the nerves (mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic), until very slowly the now dominant idea became established that this conduction is mixed electrical-chemical. We will ask in what way the modern findings contribute to a solution of the age-old mind-brain or soul-body problem.
