Psyche and Mental Illness: Addiction

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

In this chapter we deal with the topic of addiction: first with the question of the occurrence of addiction, the diagnostic classification and the frequency of addictive diseases. We present which clinical symptoms are present in people with addictive disorders and how these are related to neuronal changes. We will discuss both functional and structural changes in the brain and the processes at the level of neuronal messenger substances.
