Linguistic Approaches to Discourse: A Multi-Layered Methodology Illustrated by the Example of the Discursive Construction and Deconstruction of EUROPE after the 2015 Paris Terror Attacks

Abstract

The purpose of this research paper is twofold. Above all, it provides a multi-layered methodology for discourse analysis based mainly on theories and approaches from francophone linguistics. It is the first methodology developed by scholars of Romance languages in the German-speaking countries and is not only intended to promote the mutual reception of research, but to give a new impetus for the foundation of “Romance discourse analysis in the German-speaking world”. The paper’s second purpose is the application of this multi-layered methodology to the discursive construction and deconstruction of EUROPE, in the context of the terrorist attacks that took place in Paris, in January and November 2015. The corpus under investigation consists of 171,000 texts from French print and online press, covering the periods of eight weeks before and after the respective attacks. The analysis shows that, in the period before the events, European construction and deconstruction are built on various topics, i.e. the consequences of the Schengen Agreement, common foreign policy standards, or the financial and immigration crisis. After the attacks, the number of topics discussed in the discourse is reduced. Actors blame differing aspects for the terrorist attacks and express their positions more vehemently than before. For comprehensive analysis, diverse elements, such as genre-specific and topical aspects, or argumentative and polyphonic patterns, have to be considered.
