Abstract

Why is this book relevant? Because the world has never needed forgiveness as much as it does now. This is not because people are more selfish, self-willed, or evil than they were decades or centuries ago—presentism and cultural scolding are a recurring motif of generational detachment and tend to obscure the view rather than provide a structural analysis of the status quo—but because the supposed evil is rooted in the complexity and interconnectedness of all aspects of everyday life. Diversity causes mistakes. Mistakes lead to injuries. Injuries permeate human relationships.
