Zusammenfassung
Dieses Kapitel befasst sich mit der Frage, wie Menschen die Information über ihre Mitmenschen organisieren. Menschen werden hier als Mitglieder von Gruppen – Kategorien – betrachtet, und zwar nach gemeinsamen Merkmalen, die bei ihnen jeweils beobachtet oder ihnen zugeschrieben werden. Dieser Prozess, im Zuge dessen die Komplexität von Informationen des sozialen Kontexts reduziert wird, heißt Kategorisierung. Man nimmt an, dass die Mitglieder einer Kategorie identisches Verhalten und gleiche Eigenschaften ausweisen. In unserem Bewusstsein bilden sich stereotype Muster, die aktiviert werden, sobald wir Mitgliedern einer bestimmten Kategorie begegnen. Sind die stereotypen Muster negativ und rufen sie emotionale Ablehnung oder sogar Aggressionen gegenüber den vorurteilsbehafteten Personen hervor, sprechen wir von Vorurteilen. Vorurteile werden überwiegend automatisch, ohne bewusste Kontrolle, aktiviert. Nur in bestimmten Situationen können solche Automatismen kontrolliert und korrigiert werden.
