Lateral Ankle Instability

Abstract

The Broström-Gould operation is considered the gold standard in cases of chronic ankle instability that have failed conservative treatment. There is growing interest in arthroscopic techniques, with studies having shown less surgical morbidity, and faster recovery when compared with open surgery.

This technique uses a standard two-portal anterior arthroscopic approach and two bone anchors. Two methods of suture passing are herein described: inside-out and outside-in.

Patients can expect to start weight-bearing at 4 weeks and return to sports at 3 months. Good outcomes, with no major complications, have been reported with the technique here described.
