Anatomic Open Repair Procedures: Description of the Broström-Gould Technique

  • Chapter

Lateral Ankle Instability

Abstract

Anatomical repair of the lateral ligaments of the ankle was first described by Broström in 1966. Anatomical reinforcement of this was then described by Gould in 1980. There were good initial results from both author groups. There have however been many modifications of both techniques, again with excellent results. Many of these are long term.

The Broström-Gould technique has excellent reproducible results. This chapter will describe the history and results of the technique as well as the operative steps and post-operative protocol.
