Benannt nach Carl Friedrich Gauß (1777–1855). Ein ähnliches Verfahren wurde bereits in den „Neun Büchern arithmetischer Technik“ beschrieben, die seit ca. 200 vor Chr. in China zur Ausbildung von Verwaltungsbeamten eingesetzt wurden. Der älteste erhaltene Text stammt von Liu Hui (220–280 nach Chr.). Seine Entstehung wird auf ca. 260 nach Chr. geschätzt.
