Zusammenfassung

Die Hierarchie der Zellfunktionalitäten umfasst wenigstens vier verschiedene Ebenen: Genom, Transkriptom, Proteom und Toponom. Es besteht heute kein Zweifel, dass eine biologische Funktion nicht allein von den Mengen der daran beteiligten Moleküle abhängig ist, sondern es spielt auch – oder vielleicht sogar vor allem – der lokale Kontext, die Nachbarschaft, in der sich die einzelnen funktionellen Moleküle befinden, eine wesentliche Rolle. So ist z. B. inzwischen erwiesen, dass die relative Konzentration und differenzielle Anordnung von mehr als zwanzig Proteinen der Zellmembran und nicht die absolute Konzentration der einzelnen Proteine darüber entscheiden, ob eine Tumorzelle in einen Migrationsstatus eintreten kann. Daher müssen immer häufiger Techniken eingesetzt werden, die konsequent den räumlichen Kontext von Biomolekülen, das Toponom, analysieren.
