Chaetognatha (Pfeilwürmer) finden sich marin im Plankton aller Ozeane. Ihre etwa 130 Arten leben räuberisch und stellen etwa 5−10 % der Biomasse des Planktons. Neuere molekulargenetische Analysen sehen sie als eine basale, aber isolierte Gruppe der Protostomia.
