Zusammenfassung
Placozoa finden sich marin im Litoral der Ozeane. Obwohl mit Trichoplax adhaerens nur eine einzige gesicherte Art bekannt ist, weisen molekulargenetische Untersuchungen auf ein kompliziertes Taxon mit mindestens 18 Entwicklungslinien hin. Der Name entstand in Bezug auf die Placula-Hypothese zum Ursprung der Metazoa.
