Zusammenfassung
Nach dem Tod Alexanders 323 v. Chr. wurde das Reich unter seinen Heerführern Antigonos (Makedonien), Lysimachos (Kleinasien), Seleukos I (Mesopotamien und Syrien) und Ptolemaios I (Ägypten und Palästina) aufgeteilt. Da die Mutter Arsinoe des Ptolemaios am Hofe von Philipp von Makedonien gelebt hat, besteht die Möglichkeit, dass er mit Alexander blutsverwandt war. Im Jahre 305 v. Chr. erklärte er sich zum König und nannte sich Ptolemaios I Soter (= Retter), da er als Leibwächter Alexanders dessen Leben gerettet habe.
Sind wir nicht tot und bilden uns nur ein zu leben, wir Griechen, die wir tief ins Unglück stürzten und im Traume nur das Leben sahen? Oder leben wir zwar – indes das wahre Leben unterging? (Klage des Dichters Palladas über die Zerstörung des Museion [aus Anthologia Graeca , X, 82])
