Zusammenfassung
Nach der Darstellung der weltweiten Problematik des Eisenmangels mit aktuellen Bezügen, wird die 300-jährige Geschichte der Forschung über Eisen im menschlichen Körper beschrieben. Nach der ersten mikroskopischen Entdeckung der roten Blutzellen 1658 wurde Eisen im Jahre 1713 zum ersten Mal im Blut nachgewiesen, und dieser Befund konnte dann Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts durch neu entwickelte Methoden sicher bestätigt werden. Danach wird die weitere Entwicklung der Kenntnisse zur physiologischen Funktion und den Bindungsformen des Spurenelements dargelegt, bis zur Entdeckung von Hepcidin als zentraler Regulator der Eisenhomöostase 2001 und der Verleihung des Nobelpreises für Medizin 2019 für den Hypoxie-induzierten Faktor, der eng mit dem Eisenstoffwechsel verbunden ist. Abschließend wird ein Ausblick auf wichtige Themen der Zukunft vorgestellt, wie die Harmonisierung der Eisen-Referenzwerte der internationalen Fachgesellschaften oder die neue Sichtweise zur Bioverfügbarkeit von Ferritin-Eisen.
