Die Abbruchrate stabil eingestellter Substitutionspatienten liegt nach Untersuchungen unter 10 %. Dabei ist die Haltequote von Methadon- und Buprenorphin-Patienten etwa gleich hoch. Als Abbruchgründe werden oft genannt: drogenfreie Therapie, anderer Substitutionsarzt oder disziplinarischer Abbruch wegen fortgesetztem Drogengebrauch.
