Abstract
The management of patients with sport-related injuries of the spine is a challenging issue with regard to the ability to return to former sport activities. External force can cause sprains, contusions, vertebral body fractures, ligament ruptures, disc damage, and occasionally spinal cord injuries. As pathomechanism axial compression, hyperflexion, hyperextension, and shear movements are possible. Besides pain, the decisive factors which govern the management of spine injuries in an athlete depend on whether the spine is stable or unstable and whether the nervous system has been affected. Relevant trunk injuries can also arise due to considerable external force impact. Depending on the localization of the impact, the thorax, the abdomen, and the pelvis can be injured along with injury to the visceral organs.
