Injury and Health Risk Management in Sports

Abstract

Prevention (reduction) strategies for traumatic and overuse injuries is an element of paramount importance in nowadays sports environment. A balance between sport-specific performance and overall injury risk must be pursued to create a sustainable sport practice for our athletes and patients. Both primary and secondary prevention should be targeted through the application of general and specific interventions, thought to act on modifiable risk factors. In this field of Sports Medicine, the application of neuromuscular training programs and other specific exercise applications showed very good effectiveness in reducing overall and specific injury rate. In this chapter, we discuss the key principles and actions for a practical application of these interventions throughout the athlete’s career. The whole athlete environment is important to translate into practice injury prevention and we recommend this is read also to athlete’s families, coaches, agents and the player him/herself, not limiting our focus to just sports practitioners.
