Abstract

Cognitive development is an important aspect of children’s early psychological development, and it is also an important indicator of children’s development of the nervous system and brain. How to evaluate the early cognitive development scientifically has become the primary issue faced by early education researchers and practitioners. The paradigm of early evaluation has gradually shifted from standardized assessment to observation-based assessment in real situations. In the present study, 142 children aged 2–3 years participated in self-initiated and parents-involved play. The level of their cognitive development was assessed using the “play-based assessment of cognitive development for 2–3 years old” from the following six dimensions: number–concept recognition, symbolization, and representation, exploration and construction, problem-solving, three-dimensional pattern matching, and attention and participation.
