Zusammenfassung
Das Gedächtnis stellt den wohl bedeutendsten Bereich menschlichen Lebens dar. Dies hat schon im vorletzten Jxahrhundert der Physiologe Ewald Hering (1870) vorausgesehen, der damals schrieb: Das Gedächtnis verbindet die zahllosen Einzelphänomene zu einem Ganzen, und wie unser Leib in unzählige Atome zerstieben müsste, wenn nicht die Attraktion der Materie ihn zusammenhielte, so zerfiele ohne die bindende Macht des Gedächtnisses unser Bewusstsein in so viele Splitter, als es Augenblicke zählt (Hering 1870, S. 12).
