Zusammenfassung

Ökonomische Aspekte gewinnen in Anbetracht der demografischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung auch in der Medizin zunehmend an Relevanz. Hierfür ist v. a. der Gegensatz zwischen einer kontinuierlich steigenden Nachfrage an medizinischen Leistungen bei zugleich zunehmend beschränkten medizinischen Ressourcen verantwortlich, der sowohl im stationären als auch im ambulanten Sektor zu beobachten ist. Um auch in Zukunft eine suffiziente und zugleich effiziente medizinische Versorgung sicherstellen zu können, ist ein grundlegendes Verständnis gesundheitsökonomischer Gegebenheiten sowie krankheitsspezifischer Aspekte unabdingbar. Hohe direkte Kosten fallen im Rahmen der Erstdiagnose, aber auch beim therapierefraktären Verlauf und beim Status epilepticus an. Die indirekten Kosten sind auf Arbeitslosigkeit, Frühberentung und krankheitsbedingte Fehltage sowie eine reduzierte Lebenserwartung zurückzuführen und weisen auf Verbesserungspotenziale in der Versorgung von Menschen mit Epilepsie hin.
